Circumstances such as severe cutting of our cultural grants have led us to put brakes on producing photography festivities in Helsinki during the summer of 2024. Moreover, to scale down our costs we decided to shut down our storage space.

Save the date! 22 November – 22 December, 2024 in Keran Hallit in Espoo.

Now we are selling out on Helsinki Photo Festival’s Christmas Art Fair. Unique art works and limited edition prints of Finnish artists Svante Gullichsen, Sari Soininen and Tomas Olsen. Also, many works from international photographers like American David Lynch, Canadian Arianne Clément, Swedish Florence Montmare, British Tom Price amongst many more. In addition, we will sell unique banners, books, posters, t-shirts and tote bags, ensuring visitors find something special to bring home for the holiday season.

Helsinki Photo Festival’s Christmas Art Fair isn’t just any art sale — it’s an event designed for both passionate collectors and curious shoppers.

In collaboration with Hidalko we will present on the art fair’s opening night a new product: Helphoto hop water.

In our continuous pursuit to engage global audiences, in 2021, we embarked on yet another ambitious venture. With support from the Nordisk Kulturfond, we initiated a limited edition print program designed to empower Nordic artists to showcase and market their works to collectors and art enthusiasts worldwide.

Since its inception, our program has attracted a cohort of exceptionally talented emerging artists from the Nordic region, complemented by a select few international luminaries. These artists have garnered recognition through exhibitions at esteemed galleries, museums, and prestigious photography festivals, solidifying their status as promising talents in the global art scene.

These are just a few of the esteemed artists we collaborated with through our limited edition program: Florence Montmare, Sari Soininen, Angelika Kollin, Svante Gullichsen, Oscar Alvarado, Jooeun Bae, Carl-Mikael Ström, Dilla Djalil-Daniel, Anne Lass, Stig Marlon Weston, Tom Price, and Maria Kjartans. These photographers have been prominently featured in renowned publications such as Time, The Guardian, Die Zeit, FT Weekend, British Journal of Photography, Liberte, Helsingin Sanomat, and many others. Currently, photographic artist Sari Soininen‘s work is being exhibited at the Lahti Museum of Visual Arts MALVA from November 3, 2023, to April 7, 2024. In addition, Angelika Kollin‘s long-term project “Parenthood” has been chosen as a finalist for the prestigious Sony World Photography Award 2024. Furthermore, Svante Gullichsen‘s work is set to be featured at Tallinn’s Fotografiska in the spring of 2024.

The limited edition works of these esteemed artists, along with many others we have proudly collaborated with, have already been acquired by prestigious private and public collections spanning across Germany, France, Finland, the United States, Canada, Japan, Indonesia, Sweden, Denmark, and the United Kingdom.

Our collection of limited edition prints featuring the talented artists mentioned above is truly captivating! To showcase this exclusive collection, we curated a travelling group exhibition titled “Selected Darlings”, which previously graced renowned venues such as the world’s oldest auction house, Stockholms Auktionsverk in Sweden, as well as Finlandia Hall and West Terminal t1 in Helsinki, Finland.

Now, proudly in collaboration with Arilyn’s Virtual Art Galleries, we are presenting the whole exhibition virtually, accessible through any internet browser anywhere. Extending the scope into books

Helsinki Photo Festival is honoured to announce bringing the Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards to Helsinki in 2024.

During Paris Photo this November, Aperture declared the winners of the 2023 Paris Photo–Aperture PhotoBook Awards—the eleventh annual celebration of the photobook’s contributions to the evolving narrative of photography.

The award recognizes excellence in three major categories of photobook publishing: First PhotoBook, PhotoBook of the Year, and Photography Catalog of the Year.

The final round of the 2023 PhotoBook Awards was juried by:

Meet the Open Call Finalists at Helsinki Photo Festival 2023

The 40 international winners for the theme Courage at Helsinki Photo Festival 2023 are now selected and can be found listed below. All finalists will be showcased in exhibitions around Greater Helsinki from August 4-October 30, 2023. Some exhibition sites will start at the beginning of the festival while a few will start later. We will give more information about locations and program schedule in the upcoming weeks.

The Nordic Village, a talent platform dedicated to artists from the Nordic countries is proud to announce 10 Nordic winners. The Nordic Village photo exhibition will take place for the third time in 2023 at Hanaholmen, Swedish-Finnish Cultural Centre in Espoo.

Helsinki Photo Festival is delighted to announce the Open Call for submissions from photographers and photographic artists from all around the globe! The theme of the Open Call 2023 is COURAGE.

We live in turbulent times: climate change, pandemic, war, and constant violation of human rights. All this calls for courage.

Courage can come in many forms, whether it be the ability to face pain or grief with strength or the quality shown by those who take risks and face danger. Nelson Mandela once said: “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid but he who conquers that fear.” To be afraid and yet be able to act is true courage. “Sometimes even to live is an act of courage.” – wrote stoic philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca. But is courage an exclusively human trait?

We invite all participants to interpret the theme both broadly and creatively. You can submit up to 20 works. A written statement explaining how the submitted project fits the theme should accompany each entry. All submitted works will be reviewed by our jury consisting of leading experts in the field of photography and visual arts. Selected projects will have the opportunity to exhibit at the Helsinki Photo Festival 2023 and receive one of the festival’s awards.

We aim to select 50 artists’ works to exhibit in solo- and group exhibitions during the festival period, July 7-October 1st, 2023.

Submission deadline: March 31, 2023.

Known by most as the film director of such award-winning masterpieces as Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks to name a few, 75-year-old David Lynch has long established himself as a musician, artist and photographer. Infinite Deep presents David Lynch as the most important visual artist of our time. The focus lies on his photographic works, showcasing Lynch’s long and important artistic career, allowing the visitor to meet David Lynch’s versatility within the photograph for the very first time. The works are exhibited with a red artistic thread, which takes the spectators on a thought-provoking journey. They challenge, provoke and invite the inquisitive visitor to enter a subtle visual world.

The exhibition is divided into five parts – Snowmen, Factories, Nude, Distorted Nudes, and Portraits – that provide the framework for a unique opportunity to explore Lynch’s photographic works and to help understand his artistic way of approaching scenarios that have inspired and influenced his films.

About the Distorted Nudes picture series, David Lynch says: “Distorting these anonymous photographs was a dream come true. If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you’ve got to go deeper. Down deep, the fish are more powerful and purer.”

This year, Helsinki Photo Festival celebrates its fifth anniversary with two extraordinary exhibitions: the retrospective show featuring artists from more than fifty countries and the must-see Infinite Deep exhibition by David Lynch! The retrospective exhibition of the festival presents all the themes displayed from 2018 to 2022: Love, Anarchy, Trust, Fearless and Believe

The exhibition will take place in Helsinki’s iconic Länsiterminaali T1 (West Terminal T1), where the vibes are certainly in concord with the atmospheric Infinite Deep. Designed by Gunnar Taucher, the building was completed as a port warehouse in 1941. In 1992, it was decided to convert the building into a passenger terminal serving Tallinn’s shipping traffic and it was opened on May Day 1995. Currently, the building is planned to be demolished and replaced by a new, taller terminal building by 2026. Meanwhile, the Helsinki Photo Festival will take over part of the building and convert it for several months into a cultural hub – a democratic space for celebrating photography and visual culture.

Ulrike Koeb is raising awareness on throwaway culture

Austrian Ulrike Koeb (b. 1959, Vorarlberg) is a Vienna-based food and still life photographer. Her interest in photography is originally sparked by a love of detail and passion for colour, light and style. After her training the Viennese photo studio Liewehr she attended masterclasses in still-life photography by Charles Purvis in Maine and Hans Neleman in New Mexico, USA.

In addition, to her many commercial magazine- and book projects, Koeb’s passion lies in artistic photography. She often creates compositions with food and disposed objects and garbage found (especially from plastic) that she uses to create works for raising awareness on throwaway culture, with no cares about the consequences. Her newest solo exhibition “Reduce, reuse and recycle” will be premiered at Helsinki Photo Festival 22 with support of the Austrian Embassy Helsinki.

Ulrike Koeb’s photographs have appeared in numerous publications and have also featured in exhibitions in Muscat, London, Venice and Budapest.
