Night of the Arts, August 15th – Helsinki Photo Festival has opened their main exhibition at one of the most iconic historic warehouses in Helsinki, the Old Customs House /  “Katajanokan Tulli- ja Pakkehuone (entrance from Katajanokanlaituri). The theme for this year is “Anarchy”, and the exhibition presents the works of 50 winning finalists, including 25 winners of the Best Image competition and a multimedia presentation of 24 shortlisted artists from all over the world.

Helsinki Photo Festival started July 5th bringing photography to the streets by exhibiting the work of Finnish and international photographers in various indoor and outdoor exhibitions throughout Helsinki. The festival is also proud to introduce our novel, photography display stands, that were designed by Helsinki-based Taiwanese Tien Yi Chiao and produced in Denmark solely for the main exhibition.

This is the second edition of the Helsinki Photo Festival. The size of this year’s festival enables the largest possible number of spectators to experience the creativity and innovation of photography, during the 9 weeks exhibitions, artist talks, workshops, seminars and photowalks.

Photographers were chosen by a team of experienced jurors (Stefan Bremer, Curt Richter, Karoliina Korpilahti) including Helsinki Photo Festival curatorial team (Alexandra Stroganova and Rafael Rybczynski) out of 170 open call submissions from more than 40 countries. The team shortlisted 72 photographers out of which 50 were selected as winners.

Outdoor exhibitions can be found at the Cultural Centre Stoa in Itäkeskus, Pyhän Birgitan Puisto in Munkkisaari, Hernesaaren Ranta and Hesperian Esplanadi in Etu-Töölö. The festival is also exhibiting the work of Indonesian photographer Dilla Djalil-Daniel at the Tropical House in the Helsinki Zoo in Korkeasaari. Djalil-Daniel was one of the finalists from last year’s festival and works with issues of orangutan preservation.

Indoor exhibitions are set up in Nordic Culture Point, Pasila Urban Art Center and Cafe Rupla. The main exhibition is held at Katajanokka’s Old Customs House, Kanavakatu 6 from 11:00am – 8:00pm each day until the 9th of September.
