We encourage photographers and artists to share their work in response to; “Believe“, as a concept of imaginative, creative and expressive interpretation. Artists are required to write a description along with their image submission of how their work relates to the theme.

What does it mean to believe in somebody or something? What does it mean to believe in diversity, inclusion, belonging or well-being? Societies the world over now face ideological conflicts, some leading to violent exchange. We now struggle with social, political, religious and even environmental divisions within countries and neighborhoods. Do you believe in yourself? Can you accept the opinion and beliefs of another person? Do you believe that reasoning and technological innovations can save humans from civil and natural destruction? Do you believe that humanity can live in harmony?

How do photographers and artists respond to the notion of “Believe” is the challenge?

In the summer of 2022, Helsinki Photo Festival will showcase imagery that addresses this vital topic.

The open call starts today December 23, 2021, and ends March 31, 2022.
Sign up on picter: https://bit.ly/3qcTJTC

The application fee for the Helsinki Photo Festival is
* Early Bird €23 (until 31th January 2022)
* Standard €28 (after 1st February 2022)

Amidst the growing wave of cancellation of cultural events, swiping the cultural scene all over the world, Helsinki Photo Festival is going forward and continues building its program for this summer. For the period of twelve weeks, the event will attract visual media enthusiasts to photo exhibitions spread all over the city of Helsinki. The program includes curated exhibitions of international and Nordic photography as well as artist talks, workshops, seminars, portfolio reviews, a photo auction, guided tours and photo walks.

The biggest attractions of the festival are temporary outdoor installations – accessible day and night – located at popular tourist spots and Kansallismuseo / The National Museum of Finland in the metropolitan area. Other exhibitions of the festival such as the Nordic Village will be set up in the garden of Kansallismuseo; the cultural centre Stoa and the festival’s gallery venue located in the Helsinki’s historic Old Customs House / Tulli- ja Pakkahuone (downtown area Katajanokka).

However, there have been some preventive measures incorporated into the programme in order to protect our visitors, participants and supporters. It has been decided that until further notice, the majority of indoor activities will be moved outdoors, or curated digitally. Practice, theory and pedagogy events will be organized online, if the situation remains unchanged. The further information about the exact locations and dates will be announced in due time in print media and on our photo events calendar and Social Media.

The festival’s theme for the summer of 2020 is trust. A jury of international experts will identify artists of all skill levels for the festival and select photographs of different genres, approaches, and styles that carry the essence of trust, the theme that in the light of the current global situation has never mattered more.

The deadline for the festival’s open call was extended to April 23rd, 2020. Artists can find the call on Picter: https://bit.ly/2NmLySq

Helsinki Photo Festival theme in 2020 is Trust! Call for artists is open now!

Helsinki Photo Festival is pleased to announce their third open call! Everyone from all over the world is invited to submit their work(s) in the festival theme Trust.

We challenge photographers and artists of all ages to share with us the connections you see with our theme, in imaginative, creative expressive interpretation. Artists will need to write as part of their submission an explanation of how their work fits with the theme.

Trust is essential to life, it opens up new and unimagined possibilities. Trust is one of the most prevalent topics in our society.

What is Trust? How can Trust be perceived in visual language? How can we consciously feel Trust? What do we consider trust to be and can it be regained? Can Trust change our life and how would such a transition affect our existence? How can communities acknowledge differences while building unity? As prejudices continue to divide us, how can Trust encourage accountability and solidarity? As institutions lose credibility, the environment is changing critically, what do people do to ensure that their wishes and desires are taken seriously and delivered? What role does truth play to Trust in friendship, family or love? What happens if you lose Trust in society or humanity? In fact, there are many examples, how to interpret and associate with Trust.

We aim to select +40 artists works to exhibit in solo- and group exhibitions during the festival period, July 7th-September 9th 2020. Entries are handled by photography professionals and curators enhancing the programming, aesthetics, artistic and cultural expressions as well as the quality of the overall production. The deadline for the call for artists is, 16 April 2020! As a selected artist of the Trust theme, your work will be exhibited at Helsinki Photo Festival 2020. The exhibitions will take place in historic landmarks, warehouses, libraries, art centres, galleries, parks and waterfront areas in Helsinki.The other highlight of the festival is the Nordic Village, an exhibition format supporting emerging and groundbreaking Nordic photographers. Since 2018, this project has selected and showcased over 20 artists from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Finland. In 2020, the Nordic Village expo will be set up in the outdoor premises of the National Museum of Finland / Kansallismuseo. All selected photographers have the great opportunity for being promoted to a broad, dedicated audience, critics, photo editors, curators, gallerists, art buyers and publishers: Apply through Picter: https://contests.picter.com/helsinki-photo-festival-trust-2020

The main initiative is to increase visibility for contemporary photography through events and learning activities that allow the participants the opportunity to develop their project and their artistic independence.
