Circumstances such as severe cutting of our cultural grants have led us to put brakes on producing photography festivities in Helsinki during the summer of 2024. Moreover, to scale down our costs we decided to shut down our storage space.

Save the date! 22 November – 22 December, 2024 in Keran Hallit in Espoo.

Now we are selling out on Helsinki Photo Festival’s Christmas Art Fair. Unique art works and limited edition prints of Finnish artists Svante Gullichsen, Sari Soininen and Tomas Olsen. Also, many works from international photographers like American David Lynch, Canadian Arianne Clément, Swedish Florence Montmare, British Tom Price amongst many more. In addition, we will sell unique banners, books, posters, t-shirts and tote bags, ensuring visitors find something special to bring home for the holiday season.

Helsinki Photo Festival’s Christmas Art Fair isn’t just any art sale — it’s an event designed for both passionate collectors and curious shoppers.

In collaboration with Hidalko we will present on the art fair’s opening night a new product: Helphoto hop water.

Breaking news! We delighted to announce that all the winners of the open call competition themed Courage will be exhibited at the Sanoma House from October 4-29, 2023. Free entry.

Sanoma House is open Mon-Fri from 7am to 8pm, Sat-Sun from 9 am to 8 pm.

We live in turbulent times: climate change, pandemic, war, and constant violation of human rights. All this calls for courage. Courage can come in many forms, whether it be the ability to face pain or grief with strength or the quality shown by those who take risks and face danger. According to the jury member Emanula Mirabelli, “courage is the primary engine to fight injustices all over the world and to conquer new achievements for everyone”.

Opening October 4, 2023 at 5 p.m.

The opening ceremony inaugurated by the Artistic Director of the festival Rafael Rybczynski, and speeches by renowned scholar and photographer Stefan Bremer and groundbreaking talent Svante Gullichsen.

The exhibition is supported by Finland’s biggest newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.

Curated photo exhibition in Unioninkatu 44!

In collaboration with the Finnish Museum of Natural History LUOMUS, Helsinki Photo Festival is overjoyed to present a photo exhibition at the fence of Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden. The curated group exhibition will present the international winners of the theme Courage and take place outdoors at the garden’s fence on Unioninkatu 44 until October 30, 2023. The exhibition is accessible 24/7 to the general public.

Photo Festival is a visual arts event focused on photography opened August 5 and will end October 30. The sixth edition on the theme Courage is exhibited in the metropolitan area. The event is held annually bringing every edition a new art experiences to Greater Helsinki. In a period of 12 weeks curated photography exhibitions can be discovered in public spaces, popup events and at cultural institutions. The festival presents 50 artists from 24 countries with new works which have not been shown before in Finland.

The winners are from a variety of genres and were selected by an international jury. In 2023, the festival received 462 submissions comprising a total of 6555 images from 67 different countries. From these submissions, the jury chose 40 winners for the international open call category, along with an additional 10 emerging talents from the Nordic region.

The exhibition at Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden featured the before-mentioned 40 international open call winners.

Sixth edition running until Oct 30!

Helsinki Photo Festival is a visual arts event focused on photography opened August 5 and will end October 30. The sixth edition on the theme Courage is exhibited in the metropolitan area. The event is held annually bringing every edition a new art experiences to Greater Helsinki. In a period of 12 weeks curated photography exhibitions can be discovered in public spaces, popup events and at cultural institutions. The festival presents 50 artists from 24 countries with new works which have not been shown before in Finland.

The 2023 program includes outdoor exhibitions at Ebeneser Foundation – The Kindergarten Museum (5.8.-17.9.2023), Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden (30.8.-30.10.2023), and Hanaholmen – Swedish-Finnish Cultural Centre (5.8.-1.10.2023). The most significant exhibition will take place indoors in the Sanoma House (4.10.-29.10.2023) situated in Finlandia Park downtown Helsinki. Various educational events are scheduled, such as the Nordic Seminar (29.9.2023) at Annantalo, Portfolio reviews (30.9.2023) at Sofia Helsinki’s cultural hub in Torikorttelit in the Old Town. A workshop with Belgian three times World Press and Helsinki Photo winner Alain Schroeder is planned in the last week of October (tbc).

Kyrö x Kimmo Syväri popup exhibition

Kyrö – like most of the Finnish population – was conceived and born in a sauna. The stars were aligned as a bottle of rye whisky was opened. The five friends having a sauna and the sip from the bottle started to ponder why no one in Finland was making rye whisky despite rye playing such a huge role in Finnish history and tradition. So, they decided to start a distillery making rye whiskies. The idea seemed like a great one even in the morning, and that is where the story of Kyrö began in 2012. Kyrö has since the beginning had a strong and somewhat controversial visual brand identity. No brand truly comes to life without a unique visual presence. And for that visual presence, the black and white butts, the picturesque take on the small town of Isokyrö, all the Kyrö people and fun stuff, the delicious product photos, the whole deal, Kyrö owes a big thanks to Kimmo Syväri.

Kimmo Syväri is a Helsinki-based photographer, entrepreneur and creative thinker. He has been closely involved in the visual storytelling of Kyrö Distillery Company since 2013, almost from the very birth of the company.

“I wanted to portray the brand in an authentic yet personal Finnish way. Finnishness to me is quirky, odd and a bit dangerous. You know the moment when Dorothy realizes she is not in Sweden anymore type of thing? Kind of “after all, you never know when you are going to die so might as well embrace the moment”- mentality. I feel I was very fortunate to land this collaboration. The right people came together at the right time. I just happened to be there with them.”

Indeed, it’s all about great minds thinking alike: it takes a dreamer and a darer to recognize others with the same take on life. After all, a great visual would be a lot less without the story, and the story would not be complete without the visual interpretation of it.

In collaboration with Kyrö Distillery Helsinki Photo Festival presents a popup exhibition with Helsinki-based photographer and creative thinker Kimmo Syväri. He has been closely involved in the visual storytelling of Kyrö since the beginning of 2012. The exhibition is open now for public and ends February 18th at our popup space in the West Terminal 1 in Jätkäsaari.

This year, Helsinki Photo Festival celebrates its sigth anniversary with two extraordinary exhibitions: the retrospective show featuring artists from more than fifty countries and the must-see Infinite Deep exhibition by David Lynch! The retrospective exhibition of the festival presents all the themes displayed from 2018 to 2022: Love, Anarchy, Trust, Fearless and Believe

The exhibition will take place in Helsinki’s iconic Länsiterminaali T1 (West Terminal T1), where the vibes are certainly in concord with the atmospheric Infinite Deep. Designed by Gunnar Taucher, the building was completed as a port warehouse in 1941. In 1992, it was decided to convert the building into a passenger terminal serving Tallinn’s shipping traffic and it was opened on May Day 1995. Currently, the building is planned to be demolished by end of 2023 and be replaced by a new, taller terminal building by 2026. Meanwhile, the Helsinki Photo Festival converted it for several months into a cultural hub – a democratic space for celebrating photography and visual culture.

Helsinki Photo Festival is delighted to announce the Open Call for submissions from photographers and photographic artists from all around the globe! The theme of the Open Call 2023 is COURAGE.

We live in turbulent times: climate change, pandemic, war, and constant violation of human rights. All this calls for courage.

Courage can come in many forms, whether it be the ability to face pain or grief with strength or the quality shown by those who take risks and face danger. Nelson Mandela once said: “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid but he who conquers that fear.” To be afraid and yet be able to act is true courage. “Sometimes even to live is an act of courage.” – wrote stoic philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca. But is courage an exclusively human trait?

We invite all participants to interpret the theme both broadly and creatively. You can submit up to 20 works. A written statement explaining how the submitted project fits the theme should accompany each entry. All submitted works will be reviewed by our jury consisting of leading experts in the field of photography and visual arts. Selected projects will have the opportunity to exhibit at the Helsinki Photo Festival 2023 and receive one of the festival’s awards.

We aim to select 50 artists’ works to exhibit in solo- and group exhibitions during the festival period, July 7-October 1st, 2023.

Submission deadline: March 31, 2023.

Known by most as the film director of such award-winning masterpieces as Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks to name a few, 75-year-old David Lynch has long established himself as a musician, artist and photographer. Infinite Deep presents David Lynch as the most important visual artist of our time. The focus lies on his photographic works, showcasing Lynch’s long and important artistic career, allowing the visitor to meet David Lynch’s versatility within the photograph for the very first time. The works are exhibited with a red artistic thread, which takes the spectators on a thought-provoking journey. About the Distorted Nudes picture series, David Lynch says: “Distorting these anonymous photographs was a dream come true. If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. Ulrike Koeb is raising awareness on throwaway culture

Austrian Ulrike Koeb (b. 1959, Vorarlberg) is a Vienna-based food and still life photographer. Her interest in photography is originally sparked by a love of detail and passion for colour, light and style. After her training the Viennese photo studio Liewehr she attended masterclasses in still-life photography by Charles Purvis in Maine and Hans Neleman in New Mexico, USA.

In addition, to her many commercial magazine- and book projects, Koeb’s passion lies in artistic photography. She often creates compositions with food and disposed objects and garbage found (especially from plastic) that she uses to create works for raising awareness on throwaway culture, with no cares about the consequences. Her newest solo exhibition “Reduce, reuse and recycle” will be premiered at Helsinki Photo Festival 22 with support of the Austrian Embassy Helsinki.

Ulrike Koeb’s photographs have appeared in numerous publications and have also featured in exhibitions in Muscat, London, Venice and Budapest.

Helphoto teams up with The National Museum of Finland

Helsinki Photo Festival turns photographs into a part of the cityscape.

The annual festival presents selected works from emerging photographers from around the world. The theme of the 2022 festival is Believe – uskoa – tro.

The winning works of Helsinki Photo Festival theme are showcased from Jul 10- Oct 2 on the stone wall surrounding the museum. The winner exhibition has been curated by an international jury, who selected the 40 works, now on exhibition, out of over 300 submissions. The works on display on the wall of Museokatu and Töölönkatu can be admired round the clock and the admission is free.

Selected Darlings photo exhibition at Finlandia Gallery

Selected Darlings is an exclusive photo exhibition with limited edition prints of selected and celebrated award-winning Nordic and international visual artists. Works include art made by Sari Soininen, Svante Gullichsen, Florence Montmare, Carl-Mikael Ström, Jooeun Bae, Dilla Djalil-Daniel, Lisa Pram, Stig Marlon Weston and many others.

The exhibition is hosted by Finlandia Gallery from August 1-31st August, 22 at Pikku-Finlandia (Little Finlandia), while the city’s iconic Finlandia Hall is closed for refurbishment. Little Finlandia is a temporary venue designed by architecture students from Aalto University, enjoying high popularity among residents and visitors of Helsinki.
